The random thoughts and occasional musings of fantasy author Lorna Freeman, author of the "Borderlands" series of books, including COVENANTS, THE KING'S OWN, and SHADOWS PAST.
Yes--am so happy. Have been waiting for a long time for this - had emailed Penguin Press, had tried to locate anyplace, any spot to find out what happened to third book on Rabbit!
I just finished the book. Could NOT put it down. I took it work with me. Loved it soooo much, I wished it wouldn't end. This was sooo worth the wait but I hope the next book will be out much much much sooner. :)
This series, like the Fionavar Tapestry, are among my favorite books. I read and reread Covenants so often I had to buy another. How soon till book 4? 5?
Hello, I just received Shadows Past and stayed up through the night to read it. I'd ordered it a long time ago originally, and had feared it wouldn't come out at all. Then some time ago, I saw it reappear on Amazon UK (with a cover picture, very reassuring :D).
I just read it and can't wait for the next installment in this series. Hopefully the "The Reckoning Flames" won't take too long to be released. Btw I see you're already reading A Game of Thrones, but after you have finished it and are looking for something else to read I heartily recommend the The Thief By Megan Whalen Turner and its sequels. Take Care and good luck with your writing!;)
So what was the delay? I emailed the publishers back when they announced it first time around, and got a fob-off reply which gave zero info at all... and I guess most of your readers are just generally curious :¬)
So happy to finally see Rabbit and all of his friends (and enemies!) again. My whole family is fannish about this series from my husband to my 28-year-old daughter. So I'll be hard-put to keep this copy out of their hands long enough to read it myself!
Thanks for writing this story and thanks for creating this world. It's a lot of fun.
Received my copy of Shadows Past last week, caressed the shiny new cover and gently set it aside. Quickly retrieving Covenants and Kings Own from the bookcase, I dived back into Rabbit's world and renewed my acquaintance over several nights of late-night reading. (Bliss!) The first two books reread I gently opened the cover of book 3 and kept reading until an hour ago. Abso-blooming marvelous! I'm on pins and needles for the next installment. Thank you for transporting me. (Or, should I say 'translating' me?)
Pre-ordered the book so long ago on Borders.com that I was mystified when it showed up in my mailbox last week :) Finished the book yesterday and immediately passed it on to my friend who is just as obsessed with Rabbit's world. Great series! Thanks for keeping it going.
Hey Lorna, finally got round to reading the book instead of packing to move, well worth the hassle of packing like mad now! Great stuff and thank you!!!!
Have you thought of doing eBook versions of your books? I love your Borderland novels and I can't wait to read the next book. I loved how Jeff and Arlis were fighting over Rabbit in Shadows Past, that was hilarious! And I loved Bertie, Bertram, such a sweetie. Does Bertram talk? ^_^
When I first found out this new book was released, I gasped really loudly and clapped. My snooty coworker 'wandered' over to my desk, looked at my computer screen & announced in a loud voice, "That webpage has *nothing* to do with work!" I just looked at her and- being very excited- said, "Nope! new book by Lorna freeman! I've been waiting forever for her to continue this series!!" She stared at me and said again, "but...thats not work related. I might have to tell our boss." I just basically shrugged (maybe hummed "new book!" a few times),turned around, downloaded my borders.com coupon and made plans to leave early that day to go pick it up. Snooty coworker actually just turned around and left me alone. She NEVER does that. so thank you Lorna for (1) continuing the series (and the book was awesome!! loved it!!) and (2) being the impetus for finally shutting up Snooty coworker. My whole office loves you now. I loved how you had rabbit basically have a breakdown. poor guy has been through so much- he was owed a time to just disengage from everyone! mental health break so to speak. and i adore bertram. is he going to have an extended part next book?
Love all three. They should be reprinted. On "warrenty" you mentioned working on #4-TITLE? TIME OF RELEASE?? I'm speed. reader and read Covenant 8 timesbefore slowing. Rank your series with Lackay's Valdemar and Patricia Briggs Dragon Blood other favorites. Please excuse cellphone typos.

ReplyDeleteHi Lorna,

ReplyDeleteHi Barb,
ReplyDeleteThank you! As I said, it's been a long and sometimes difficult journey, but I'm happy that Shadows Past has finally released.
And the rest of you, thank you also. And I promise that there won't be nearly the wait for the next one. Cross my heart.
I got my copy a couple of days ago, and finished it the same night. :) It was great.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the books! I've read and re-read the series, and it NEVER gets old! That is such a rare gift - did I mention I LOVE your books??

I love your writing -- I've had to buy a second "Covenants" as my first copy was in danger of disintegration. :)
ReplyDeleteI see the most recent book is available as an ebook (Kobo)-- so I know have a dead tree & digital version of "Shadows Past". :)
I know you have no control over this -- but has your publisher mentioned if/when the backlist may be put in ebook format?
lorna your boarderlands series are the greatest i enjoy the plot the magical system and the way it seems so realistic your the best
